MFPE Position Announcement

The Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE) seeks a qualified individual to fill the position of Chief Financial Officer, based in Helena.  Qualifications for position include a Bachelor’s Degree in business, accounting, finance or related area, with CPA preferred. Successful applicants should have professional experience and/or formal training in fields related to job description, including organizational accounting and budgeting, financial management, and payroll management.

The position is responsible for the overall financial administration, accounting, payroll, inventory management, financial reporting, regulatory compliance and related functions of MFPE.

MFPE is a statewide union representing thousands of members employed in all aspects of public service and education.

Starting salary of $81,598 with scheduled contractual increases.  Excellent benefits including employer-paid health insurance, four weeks paid vacation, pension, and 401(k)plan. Some in-state and out-of-state travel is required. MFPE is an equal opportunity employer.

MFPE Chief Financial Officer

Position Summary:  The chief financial officer is responsible for the overall financial administration, accounting, payroll, inventory management, financial reporting, regulatory compliance and related functions of MFPE.  This is a professional staff position, based in Helena and responsible to the MFPE Executive Director.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance or related area.  Experience and/or formal training in fields related to job description with at least three years of high-level accounting experience. CPA desirable. Computer literacy.  Valid driver’s license.

Duties and Responsibilities:  The chief financial officer shall

1.     Assist and advise governance and executive director in budget development, implementation, and monitoring.  Assist governance leaders with financial information and reporting as necessary and appropriate.

2.     Organize and manage financial transactions of MFPE, including purchasing, accounting, and reporting.

3.     Handle a wide range of accounting activities and information, including preparation, submission, summarization, and reconciliation of data.

4.     Prepare and submit required information and reports to assure regulatory compliance, including but not limited to IRS Form 990, US Department of Labor LM-2, state and local tax forms, and other required filings of MFPE.

Process and distribute monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.

5.     Establish and maintain internal accounting procedures, systems, and reporting.

6.     Maintain accounting and payroll filing, record keeping systems, and monitoring system for MFPE local standards of affiliation.

7.     Prepare and process payroll; maintain payroll, benefits, retirement, and insurance programs and systems; handle payroll questions; generate payroll reports.

8.     Manage employee benefit programs and serve as liaison with program providers.

9.     Serve as liaison with banking institutions, vendors, insurance providers, and external auditors/financial professionals.

10.  Maintain inventory of office supplies and purchase supplies.

11.  With membership specialist/information technology specialist coordinate computer, technology, and data systems of MFPE and plan for continued and necessary updates and improvements.

12.  Assist in logistical planning and implementation of MFPE’s annual educators’ conference.

13.  Manage the business and financial affairs of the Montana Professional Teaching Foundation and Montana Federation of Public Employees Foundation.

14.  Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
